Randomized clinical trial to assess the effect of vitamin D on treatment resistant depression
A large multi-centred trial that is being conducted in partnership with the START Anxiety & Mood Disorders Clinic. Funded by the Lotte and John Hecht Memorial Foundation, with the provision of vitamin D by Biotics Research, this study completed and was published in 2017.
Randomized clinical trial to assess the effect of Delivra™ Joint Health Cream on treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee
Multi-centre study supported in conjunction with Dalhousie University’s Pain Management Unit, and NCNM’s Helfgott Research Institute. This project has been generously funded by the Atlantic Innovation Fund, Federal Government of Canada. Delivra Inc., continues collaborations with Seroyal International. The study was completed in 2017 and is undergoing analysis.
Randomized clinical trial to assess the effect of melatonin on lung cancer recurrence and mortality (AMPLCaRe)
A large five-year multicentred trial that is being conducted in partnership with the Canadian Association of Thoracic Surgeons. Funded by the Lotte and John Hecht Memorial Foundation, with the provision of melatonin by SISU Inc., this study is expected to be completed in 2018.
Pilot study to assess the safety and effectiveness of a compound natural health product in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Randomized trial to explore nutritional deficiencies associated with ADHD. This trial tested a compound NHP for treatment in this population. Funded jointly by a SickKids Research Foundation grant and SISU Inc., this trial ceased in 2016.
Yoga therapy for autonomic nervous system functioning and psychosocial health amongst cancer survivors
OICC and CCNM are collaborating with Ottawa University on a clinical trial to explore the impact of yoga on autonomic function and heart rate variability. This is a randomized trial funded by the Canadian Complementary Medicine Research Fund and is expected to be completed by 2020.
Pragmatic clinical trial to assess the addition of naturopathic medicine to usual care in the management of type 2 diabetes
Multi-centre study supported in conjunction with William Osler Health system (Brampton Civic Hospital) and Wise-Elephant Family Health Team. Funded generously by the Lotte and John Hecht Memorial Foundation. This study is expected to be completed by 2021.
The Canadian/US Integrative Oncology Study (CUSIOS): Advanced integrative oncology treatment for patients with advanced stage cancer
Multi-centre six-year prospective observational study in conjunction with Bastyr University exploring the impact of advanced integrative care delivered by NDs for patients with advanced cancer. Eleven participating clinics across North America are recruiting patients individuals to describe quality of life, cost of care, patient experience and survival outcomes for patients with advanced stage breast, colorectal, ovarian, and pancreatic cancers. This study is expected to be complete in 2022.
The Thoracic Peri-Operative Integrative Surgical Care Evaluation (POISE) Trial (The Thoracic POISE Trial)
OICC and CCNM are collaborating with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute on an 11-year pragmatic randomized clinical trial to explore the impact of integrative cancer care for patients with lung and gastroesophageal cancers. Outcomes associated with thoracic surgery, quality of life, survival and cost effectiveness will be evaluated within three centres across Canada. This study is about to enter active enrollment for the feasibility phase.
