Chemistry I is a three-credit, eight-week introductory course to introduce the fundamental concepts of chemistry. The course will emphasize the physical and chemical principles of chemistry relating to matter and its transformations including measurement, atoms and molecules, nuclear chemistry, ions, the mole, reaction stoichiometry, gases, solutions, and acids and bases.

SBC100 (Biochemistry) is a three-credit, 8-week introductory biochemistry course designed to build on knowledge acquired in SGC100. In SBC100, students will learn the fundamental concepts of biochemistry as it pertains to the human body. The focus of this course is on the structure and metabolism of macromolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. Essential biochemistry concepts including glycolysis, protein synthesis, enzymes, the citric acid cycle, the electron transport chain and ATP synthesis are thoroughly investigated.

The application of biochemistry to naturopathic principles is integrated throughout the course; providing students with a unique opportunity to learn biochemistry within the context of naturopathic medicine. Incorporation of a virtual laboratory component enhances and re-enforces course material and allows the student to experience a practical application of biochemistry while maintaining the convenience of online learning. SBC100 provides the necessary pre-requisite knowledge required for the ND program.

SGC100 is a prerequisite for SBC100.

Organic Chemistry is a three-credit, 8-week introductory course designed to build on knowledge acquired in SGC100. In SOC100, students will learn the fundamental concepts of organic chemistry. The nomenclature and properties of organic compounds including hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, ethers, thiols, amines and amides will be studied in detail. The chemistry of these compounds and their physical properties are examined in depth.

The application of organic chemistry to naturopathic principles is integrated throughout the course; providing students with a unique opportunity to learn organic chemistry within the context of naturopathic medicine. General Chemistry (SGC100) or an equivalent course from a recognized university is a prerequisite for Organic Chemistry, SOC100.

Biology (SBI101) is a three-credit, eight-week introductory course to provide a foundation in biology. It covers the molecular and cellular basis of life, biochemical processes, cell structure and function, membrane transport and inheritance. It serves as a foundation for further studies in biological disciplines such human biology and human physiology.

Biology (SBI102) is a three-credit, eight-week introductory course in human biology to provide a solid foundation in basic and applied human biology. The course will introduce the organ systems of the human body and emphasize the integration of structure and function at different levels of biological organization that regulates the body’s internal environment.

There are no prerequisites required for Biology 101 or 102; however, if you are planning to take both biology and physiology, we recommend you complete biology prior to taking physiology. Students should expect a minimum of 10 hours per week per course to complete the online modules, assessments, and tutorials.

Physiology (SPH101) is a three-credit, eight-week introductory course to provide a solid foundation in basic physiology. The course will cover the integration and coordination of basic cell processes and emphasize the mechanisms by which cells and tissues of the body operate to maintain homeostasis and control. Topics include the integrative functions of the major systems of the human body including communication, integration and homeostasis in the endocrine system, central nervous system, and musculo-skeletal systems.

Physiology (SPH102) is a three-credit, eight-week course that continues and builds on the concepts taught in SPH101. The course emphasizes clinical physiology including the integrative functions of the major systems of the human body as well as metabolism, growth and aging. Topics include the cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal system, kidney, and reproductive systems.

SPH101 or an equivalent course from another institution is a prerequisite required for SPH102.

If you are planning to take both biology and physiology prerequisites, we recommend you complete biology prior to taking physiology.

Given the condensed nature of the courses, students should expect a minimum of 10 hours per week per course to complete the online modules, assessments, and tutorials.

Psychology is a three-credit, eight-week introductory course designed to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of psychology. This course will investigate the field of psychology, the study of behavior, thought and experience affected by physical, mental, social and environmental factors. Beginning with an investigation of the workings of the human brain; linking understanding of structures and function in the brain and how they work together to produce different behaviors will be reviewed. The concept of nature vs. nurture and its interaction and effect on personality and behavior will be reviewed and how past experiences and certain conditions can influence our thoughts and behavior. Understanding the nature of how environment and interactions can affect individuals, as well as developing an appreciation for emotions and how they can influence happiness and health will be applied.

There is no prerequisite for psychology; however, given the condensed nature of the course, students should reserve a minimum of 10 hours per week per course to complete the online modules, assessments, and tutorials.
