Course description
This 1.5 hour one-on-one course is for NDs seeking remediation or wanting a refresher in how to safely collect blood. The emphasis of the course is on safety, best practices, and proper technique in outpatient settings. Students will develop competency in the safe handling, and collection of specimens commonly required for laboratory evaluation, which includes patient preparation, collection of specimen, processing, storage and transportation of specimens. The course will also cover the types of tubes used, the preservative in each tube, the tests done in each tube type, the correct preparation of each tube before it is sent to the laboratory for analysis, correct labeling of each tube, and placement in a specimen collection bag. The Phlebotomy performance standard is used as the formative learning tool for this course. This performance standard reflects the level of competency expected of naturopathic doctors in clinical practice.
